It’s World Doula Week!
Today kicks off World Doula Week! World Doula Week celebrates how doulas all over the world make a difference!
As a birth doula, I help mamas feel loved and supported through labor and birth. I am able to help the mom with making sure she has informed consent before making medical decisions, helping with pain relief and comfort techniques, and supporting her partner by offering suggestions and doing tasks so that he can be more present for her. As a postpartum doula, I take care of the everyday tasks, like cleaning and cooking, so mamas can spend more time cuddling and bonding with their babies.
Doulas are invaluable and it’s been amazing to see more and more organizations publicly endorse the benefits of having doulas at births. In 2019, ACOG, The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, said, “Evidence suggests that continuous one-to-one emotional support provided by support personnel (that is not a relative or friend), such as a doula, is associated with improved outcomes for women in labor.”
Here are just some of the proven positive outcomes of having a doula at your birth:
A woman’s husband, partner, friend, or parent can play a great and important role for her through her labor, but the specific training that doulas go through to be able to assist the mom physically, emotionally, and informationally are unique and essential in their own specific way.
